Albstadt, World cup 2013

21 May 2013
First round of 2013 World cup is over. Both elite races were interesting till the very end. Women's race had all the big names except Julie Bresset (broken collarbone). A lot was expected from Marianne Vos, and she did great, but since it was her debut in World cup, she started from behind and had whole peloton to pass. Marianne finished 11th. Fight for podium was amongst 5 riders: Eva Lechner, Maja Włoszczowska, Katrin Leumann, Tanja Zakelj and Alexandara Engen who won the eliminator race. They were together pretty much whole race, Engen seemed to be the weakest one, got dropped several times but always managed to get back. Tanja Zakelj looked strong and very comfortable in technical sections. But in the end it was Eva Lechner who attacked in last lap and no one could respond. Maja Włoszczowska spent lot of energy to catch the leading group since her starting position was further back as she missed lot of points because of her injury last year. But she held on the silver medal. Katrin Leumann took 3rd place and her best result in World Cup so far.

Men's race was affected by weather conditions. Heavy rain made the Albstadt course even more challenging and organizers had to close one of the technical sections and let all riders use the chicken way. Mud and rain had huge role in the final results. Nino schurter started really well, but after first lap he ended around 20th position and stayed around there for rest of the race. Julien Absalon lead the race for several laps until major bad luck ruins his race. His rear derailleur got stucked between cassette and wheel and was beyond repair, Julien even throw his bike on ground with anger and destroyed it completely. He had more than one minute lead in that time. Then few names moved forward and Sergio Mantecon Gutierrez lead the race for some time. But what a surprise in the last lap when Daniel McConnell passed Olympic Champion Jaroslav Kulhavý in uphill and then caught on Mantecon and passed him 2 turns before finish and won his first ever world cup, actually he never finished in top 10 before in world cup. Jaroslav Kulhavy finished 3rd.
